DATA’S IRRESISTIBLE CONNECTIONS TO OPERATIONS AND NUMBER SENSE

This article discusses a workshop designed to enhance elementary teachers’ understanding of how data, number sense, and operations are interconnected. Despite the important role of data in the Common Core State Standards, many teachers have reported feeling unprepared to teach data concepts. Accordingly, the workshop engaged teachers in hands-on activities (i.e., data blocks, datafied counting collections, graph–talk routines) designed to deepen their knowledge and confidence in teaching data. These activities helped teachers explore connections between data and other math concepts (e.g., comparison, counting, estimation). The article highlights the importance of viewing mathematics as an interconnected whole and offers strategies to integrate data rich activities into classroom instruction, promoting deeper mathematical understanding and student engagement.
