Iris Award
2025 Iris Carl Travel Grant Award Recipients being recognized the 2025 NCSM Annual Conference

Iris Carl Travel Grant Award

The NCSM honors Iris Carl, former NCSM President, Ross Taylor/Glenn Gilbert Awardee, and international leader in mathematics education, through the NCSM Iris Carl Travel Grant. This grant provides financial support for mathematics educators and emerging leaders to attend the NCSM Annual Conference, in alignment with the NCSM’s mission to cultivate a diverse and well-informed group of leaders in mathematics education at all levels. The organization is deeply committed to supporting young members and helping them develop into outstanding leaders.

The grant offers up to $1200 to cover expenses such as transportation, lodging (up to three nights), and meals (excluding those provided by the conference registration). It also includes a waiver for conference registration. Recipients are required to submit a report on their conference experience, along with a completed reimbursement form. Detailed instructions and forms will be provided by the NCSM Awards Chair directly to the recipients.

An Iris Carl Travel Grant applicant must meet the following:

  • Was a member of NCSM by May 31, 2026.
  • Has not been able to attend an NCSM Annual Conference for the past three years.
  • Serves in a leadership role in mathematics education in her/his school, district, state, province, or some other capacity.

The Awards Chair and Awards Committee will review the applications and select the Iris Carl grantees. Applicants are scored based on the following:

A brief typed proposal (two pages maximum) that includes the following:

  • Evidence of the applicant’s leadership role in mathematics education
  • An explanation of what the applicant expects to gain from attending this conference
  • An explanation of how the applicant’s attendance will benefit others in mathematics education in her/his local area
  • An explanation of the applicant’s need for supporting funds
  • A letter of support that describes the applicant’s leadership in mathematics education

Submissions for 2026 are closed. The application deadline for the 2026 NCSM Annual Conference was June 1, 2026. Information for the 2027 award cycle will be posted on this webpage and shared via email once available.

Grantees will be notified by July 1, 2026.

There will be a minimum of three grants available for the 2026 NCSM Annual Conference. To honor the work of Iris Carl to open the doors for people who have been historically or are currently marginalized, at least one of the travel grants will be awarded to a person from an underrepresented population within the mathematics leadership community.
